Ugliness

Spirit said:
“Write a raw and ugly poem,
For this life is raw and ugly at times.”

There has been much written of love.
Love is soft and kind,
Warming to consider.

There is no shame in love.

But –
What of the ugliness?

What of the moments
That make us cringe?
The times when our skin crawls
For anxiety

For every message we have known
That tells us something, we –
Our very being –
Is wrong?

Write something ugly
About the aching
Misery
When what we are
Is in conflict
With what we think
We are supposed to be

And end it
With a gentle reminder:

These chains society places upon us,
That we place upon ourselves,
Are illusions
Not reflective
Of the Soul
